마법의 주문 - 데이터 가라사대. 직업을 묻는 것 같지만 꽤 철학적인 질문이다. 하는 일의 의미와 본질까지 묻는다. 아주 오래 전, 그러니까 야후가 최고로 잘 나가던 웹 초창기에, 야후의 구인광고에 이런 문구가 있었다. 정확히 기억나진 않지만 대강 이랬다. 인터넷 업계에 발을 담근 지 20년이 가까워지고 있다. 10여년 전, 라이코스라는 회사에서 검색엔진을 책임지던 시절에도 나는 하는 일이 뭐냐 는 질문에 쉽게 답하지 못했다. 컴퓨터 관련 전문가라고 하면 갑자기 망가진 PC를 들이대며 수리를 맡기던 시절이기도 했지만, 새롭게 떠오른 분야에서 내가 하는 일을 정의하는 건 그리 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 하지만 여전히 질문은 계속되고 있었다.
